Air conditioning is an amenity that is often taken for granted until the minute it stops working properly. Especially during the summer months, a broken or malfunctioning AC unit can cause discomfort for you and your family. At worst, the issue can even be life-threatening.

With that said, air conditioning problems are quite common and are relatively easy to diagnose. Here are the five most common AC issues and how to fix them!

A broken or malfunctioning AC unit can cause discomfort for you and your family as well as be life-threatening. Here's how to fix common AC issues.

1. The Unit Is Blowing Warm Air

There are a handful of reasons why your AC unit might be blowing warm air. In most cases, it is due to a clogged air filter. When this occurs, the evaporator coil can no longer take in warm air, and as a result, that air is forced out of the unit.

The best way to prevent this issue from occurring is to check your air filter regularly and replace it every few months. You should also have a professional service your equipment at least twice yearly. It costs just $75 – $90 on average to have your air conditioning serviced!

2. The Unit Has a Refrigerant Leak

Freon is the agent that is used to cool the air inside your AC unit. When refrigerant leaks, it can not only damage the connections inside your unit but also leak outside the unit. As refrigerant is hazardous to one’s health, it’s important to address the issue as soon as possible.

A minor leak can be resolved by sealing the leak and topping off the refrigerant. A major leak, on the other hand, might require that you replace the unit altogether. Given the toxic nature of refrigerant, it’s recommended that you contact a professional to handle a leak.

3. The Unit Is Making Unusual Noises

A faulty AC unit can make a wide range of noises, depending on the issue. If you hear a rattling noise, for example, there might be a loose component inside the unit. If you hear a high-pitched squealing noise, on the other hand, there might be an issue with the belt.

Unless you have experience replacing AC unit parts, it’s usually best to have a professional look at your unit to diagnose the problem.

4. The Unit Is Leaking Water

If your AC unit is leaking water, this suggests that you are dealing with clogged drainage—whether due to dirt, debris, or fungus. When the water has nowhere else to go, it will overflow out of the unit.

Water leaks are hazardous and can cause severe damage to your home. For this reason, it’s recommended that you contact a professional to repair your leaky unit rather than trying to tackle the issue on your own.

5. The Thermostat Is Faulty

In certain cases, it may be the thermostat—not the air conditioning unit itself—that prevents your system from functioning properly. If you suspect an issue with your thermostat, first remove the cover to check for a buildup of dirt. If you own a battery-powered thermostat, check whether the batteries need to be replaced. Finally, consider upgrading to a smart thermostat. Beyond eliminating calibration and battery-related issues, a smart thermostat helps the average homeowner save 8% on their energy bill!
