This week I picked up a brand new bullet journal. I love new planners. So full of possibilities! I have had to fight the urge to dive right in and start writing in it though. It is going to take some pre-planning to make sure it is set up the way I like. And the first step is deciding which bullet journal trackers I need for 2020.

For years I used to have multiple notebooks and calendars to track everything and it was a huge pain in the butt when I would travel. These things are heavy and take up room. That is why I took up bullet journaling last year. I have everything I need in one place. And no matter where I am in the world, all the information I need is at my fingertips. So even if there isn’t wifi where I am, I can still access the information. That is the true beauty of still using the good old paper and pen method.

For me, last year’s bullet journal is a good reference for what needs to be included in my 2020 planner. I look at which spreads I used the most, which ones I abandoned and which ones didn’t quite work and need to be tweaked.

If you are just starting a bullet journal for the first time, it can be a little intimidating. Please don’t get over-whelmed by the beautiful Instagram accounts or the huge list of bullet journal tracker ideas below. Know that you will go through a trial and error phase. Yes, there will be mistakes as you go through the learning process. Bullet journaling is a skill. No doubt. But if you give yourself grace and time, you will find a world of infinite possibilities!

Is bullet journaling time consuming?

Yes and no. It does take time to set up new pages. And honestly, I find that time very inspiring. It helps you focus on the goals of that particular spread. You can’t scroll Facebook and set up a bullet journal tracker at the same time. You just can’t. Personally I believe that time is well spent because it is solidifying in your brain your plan and the outcomes you want.

Once your tracker is set up, it takes very little time to input information as required. And even less time to review, analyze or access that information in the future. And that is why bullet journalling is so awesome.

Of course if you opt to go very minimalist with your bullet journal spreads, it will take less time than someone who wants to make, in my opinion, a work of art. Most newbies start with very basic looking trackers and then as they gain experience, try more elaborate or decorative designs.

How much time you need to bullet journal is entirely up to you and how much detail you wish to log.

Do I have to use all of these bullet journal tracker ideas?

Absolutely not! Bullet journaling is about customization. You make your planner fit you, not the other way around. If you have had pre-printed planners in the past and abandoned them, chances are most of the pages in it didn’t work for you and that is why you just gave up.

If you are starting your very first bullet journal,

  1. I suggest looking through the list below of bullet journal tracker ideas and picking one or two that resonate with you.
  2. Then go to Instagram and try to find examples of those spreads.
  3. Pick a style you like and plan it out on a blank sheet of paper.
  4. Once you like the way it looks, duplicate it in your bullet journal.
  5. Commit to filling in your tracker or log for at least a month.
  6. When the month is done, evaluate how well that tracker or log worked for you.
  7. Replicate it or tweak it for the next month if you feel it was a success.
  8. Abandon it and try something new from the list if it was a bust.

It can be really exciting to start a new planner and a new year but I want you to really think about what you need your bullet journal to do for you before you dive right in. You can print off the complete list of bullet journal tracker ideas here. Go through it, check the ideas that sound good to you, cross off the ones that definitely don’t apply to you. Then prioritize the checked ones from most useful to “I may try that”. Choose a few and get to work!
