One of the reasons I started to think about wanting to transition to grey hair was because my hair started to get very frizzy, especially the ends. I thought it was the excessive dyeing of my hair that was creating this problem. Turned out, it wasn’t the over-processing. It was the grey hair that I was trying to cover, making their presence be known. Once I seen that letting my hair go gray naturally did not eliminate the problem, I set out on a mission to rid my hair of frizziness.
If you are dealing with grey hair frizz, and think the only solution is to shave your head, try out my tips for getting smooth, healthy and beautiful-looking, grey hair.
How To Get Rid Of Grey Hair Frizziness
1. Get regular hair cuts
No matter if you are keeping it short or growing it long, you have to get trims every 6 weeks. Split ends can travel up the shaft and can be one source of your frizz. By staying on top of split ends and not letting them spread, you can cut down on the amount of frizziness on your hair ends.
2. Use gentle hair accessories
Another reason your hair may be frizzy is because you are breaking your hair by using hair accessories that pinch and bind. I used to wear my hair up all the time in a ponytail. My hairdresser was able to see that right away because she said my hair was breaking where I would secure my hair with an elastic. Try using Claw Clips instead of elastics and Colour Match Bobby Pins instead of hair clips.
3. Use good quality products on your hair
I strongly recommend a purple shampoo and conditioner specifically developed for grey hair. Jhirmack Ageless Shampoo and Jhirmack Silver Brightening Conditioner is what I use and I absolutely love the way these products brighten and highlight the grey.
If you have a problem with your hair looking dull or yellow, you have to try them. If you do not want to choose a purple shampoo and conditioner, look for products that do not have a lot of harsh ingredients that may strip the hair of their natural oils.
Two other products I use to cut down on frizziness is an alcohol/fragrance free hairspray, like FRAGFRE Hair Finishing Spray and a great serum like Moroccan Smoothing Lotion. I find the less you hair flies around, the less likely it will frizz up later on in the day.
4. Seal your hair cuticles
Extreme hot water is not good for your skin or your hair. Hot water can dry out your hair which can lead to breakage. Use warm water for your shower time and then get in the habit of sealing your hair cuticles at the end of your shower with a blast of cool water for one minute. That will get you moving on cold mornings and leave you refreshed during the summer months.
5. Never twist or rub your hair excessively when wet
Wet hair is extremely vulnerable. Be gentle. Never twist your hair up in a towel or rub your hair vigorously to get the damp out. Tap dry with a towel or carefully wrap your head in Women’s Soft Shower Hair Turban.
6. Do not blow dry your hair till bone dry
Using the highest setting on your hair dryer and/or drying your hair till it is bone dry will cause frizziness. Use a lower setting and let your hair air dry at the end of your process. You may want to invest in a better hair dryer as well like the Ceramic Negative Ionic Blow Dryer With Cool Shot.
7. Do not over manipulate your hair
I know you want to look perfect but more brushing will only lead to more frizz. Always point the blow dryer down when using so that you are not creating a ton of fly away hairs and try not to over stimulate the hair by over manipulating when drying.
8. Calm your hair after using heat products
This is one of my favourite things to do when I am getting ready, especially in the summer when using a blow dryer just makes me break out into a full on, midlife hot flash. Cool your hair and face with the cold setting on your blow dryer for a 2 minutes. Your hair will love you and you will feel refreshed!
9. Take care of your hair, even when you sleep
Take all hair accessories out when you go to bed and trade in that cotton pillowcase for one made of satin. Cotton draws out the natural moisture from your hair. Keep your hair hydrated and your head nice and cool. You are going to love sleeping with a Luxury Satin Pillowcase.
Do you have split ends and frizziness predominantly on one side of your face? That probably is a result of you sleeping more on that side. Switching to a Natural Silk Pillowcase or satin pillowcase should alleviate that problem but try to even out your sleep positions to get the most benefit.
When I first noticed an increase in frizziness in my hair, I did a lot of research. I tried a lot of different products and I asked a lot of hair stylists how to get rid of it. All the above mentioned tips and products I use and recommend to improve the way your hair looks and feels. You too can have soft, frizz free grey hair. Once you do, you won’t ever go back to dyeing.
